    Ascaris and other parasitic worms infest the intestines and cause malnutrition in children.

Preventive Measures

    1. Give daily bath to children and babies.
    2. Wash hands with soap and water before eating.
    3. Wash with soap and water or disinfect fruits and vegetables
        eaten raw like duhat, sineguelas, bayabas and vegetables salads.
    4. Cut fingernails short.
    5. Instruct children not to put fingers in the mouth.
    6. Encourage children and everyone to wear slippers and shoes
        at all times, especially when walking on the ground.
    7. Maintain a clean environment. Keep the house clean. 
        Teach children to use the toilet.

Herbal Medications
   
For Ascaris or Trichina:


    1. Ipil-ipil seeds
        For Children: Eat the seeds of 5 fresh pads raw. Repeat after one week,
        if there are no results.
        For Children and Adults: Cook 1 cup of dried seeds in frying
        pan without oil. Do not burn seeds. Pulverize. Mix with milk or water.
        Dosage:
        Adults: 1 teaspoon, 2 hours after supper
                Children: (7-9 yrs.) 1/4 teaspoon, 2 hours after supper
                              (10-12 yrs.) 1/2 teaspoon, 2 hours after supper
Note: Dosage may be repeated after one week if needed.
   
    2. Papaya seeds
        * Dry 1 cup of seeds and pulverize. Mix with 1 cup milk or water
        - Dosage:
          Adults: 1 teaspoon, 2 hours after supper
          Children: (7-9 yrs.) 1/4 teaspoon, 2 hours after supper
                        (10-12 yrs.) 1/2 teaspoon, 2 hours after supper
Note: Dosage may be repeated after one week if needed
   
    3. Akapulko seeds
        * Cook 1 cup of dried seeds in frying pan without oil.
           Pulverize. Mix with 1 cup milk or water
        - Dosage:
          Adults: 1 teaspoon, 2 hours after supper
          Children: (7-9 yrs.) 1/4 teaspoon, 2 hours after supper
                        (10-12 yrs.) 1/2 teaspoon, 2 hours after supper
Note: Dosage may be repeated after one week if needed
   
For Pin Worms:   
    1. Niyog-niyogan seeds
       - Eat raw 2 hours after supper. Repeat after one week if needed.
       Dosage:
          Adults: 10 seeds
        Children: (4-7 yrs.) 4 seeds
               (8-9 yrs.) 6 seeds
              (10-12 yrs.) 7 seeds

    2. Pineapple fruit, ripe
        - Eat 2-3 slices with every meal for one week.
   
Note: When pinworms come out at night. wet cotton with oil and remove pinworm with cotton soaked in oil.
         Change the beed sheet, underwear and pajamas every night for one week.

    Underarm body odor is the unpleasant smell coming out of the underarms or armpits.

Water Treatments

 
    1. Daily bath with a clean change of clothing, including all underwear.
    2. Change clothes every time they get wet with perspiration.
        Better yet, take a bath with every change of clothing, if possible.
    3. Drink at least 6 glasses of water during waking hours.
    4. Avoid spicy foods. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Herbal Medications

 
    1. Tawas ("Alum") with kalamansi juice mixture
        * Take a piece of solid tawas and pulverize it. Mix
          1 tablespoon with the juice of 1 or 2 kalamansi.
        - Apply on the armpit every after bath and as necessary.
          Use a deodorant.

    2. Buyo-kalamansi deodorant
        * Extract juice from buyo leaves and mix with kalamansi juice.
        - Apply as deodorant every after bath and at bedtime.

    A toothache is any pain in or about a tooth.

Water Treatments

 
    1. Brush teeth every after meals. Massage gums 

        with clean fingers after brushing.
    2. Apply ice pack or ice compress for swollen gums and 

        cheeks for 30 minutes, 3 times a day.
    3. These treatments are for temporary relief only. 

        See the dentist for proper treatment of cavities.

Herbal Medications

 
    1. Abukado seed
        * Slice a small piece that will fit into the tooth cavity.
        - Place as filling inside the cavity. Renew fillings 2 times a day.

    2. Bawang fillings
        * Slice a small piece, enough to fit the tooth cavity.
        - Place inside the cavity as filling. Renew the fillings, 2 times a day.

    3 Kataka-taka leaves
        * Crush young kataka-taka leaves.
        - Apply directly on swollen face.

    4. Herba Buena leaves
       * Pound fresh leaves and extract the juice. Moisten a small piece
         of clean cotton with the juice
       - Place moist cotton inside the cavity as filling.

Note: These Medications are only temporary relief of toothache 

         due to cavities.

    Swollen gums or stomatitis is an inflammation of the soft tissues of the mouth.

Water Treatments

    1. Hot salt gargle. 3 times a day before meals.
    2. Massage gum with clean fingers every after hot salt gargle.
    3. Brush teeth with soft tooth brush. Brush teeth every after meals.
    4. Drink at least 4 glasses of fruit juice during the day.
    5. See the dentist for gum swelling and the physician for mouth infections

Herbal Treatments

    1. Bayabas leaves decoction mouthwash
        * Boil one cup of chopped fresh leaves in 2 glasses 
         of water for 10 minutes.
          Strain and cool.
        - Use the decoction for hot salt gargle or mouthwash every after meals.
   
    2. Bunga fruit mouthwash
        * Peel and chop 3 fruits and boil in 2 glasses of water for 10 minutes.
        - Use as mouthwash of hot bunga gargle.

    3. Kaymito leaves gargle
        * Boil 1 cup of chopped fresh leaves in 2 glasses 
           of water for 10 minutes.

    4. Duhat leaves mouthwash
        * Boil 10 chopped fresh leaves in 2 glasses of water for 10 minutes.
        - Use the decoction for mouthwash or gargle.
   
    5. Talong leaves mouthwash
        * Boil 3 chopped leaves in 2 glasses of water for 10 minutes.
        - Use the decoction for mouthwash or gargle.

    Sunburn or erythema is a redness of the skin occuring in patches of
variable sizes and shapes due to excessive exposure to sunlight.

Water Treatments

    1. Starch bath daily for 3-5 days.
    2. Bathe with rain water. Powder with starch or gawgaw after the bath.

Herbal Medications

    1. Alusiman leaves
        *Extract juice from the leaves.
        - Apply on the prickly heat after the starch bath.

    2. Bayabas leaves
        * If there is infection, boil 1 cup of chopped leaves 
           in one gallon of water.
           Add 2 gallons of cold water.
        - Bathe with this decoction.

    A sprain is the wrenching of a joint, producing a stretching
or laceration of the ligaments.

Water Treatments

    1. Ice pack on the ankle or wrist, 3 times a day immediately 
        after the sprain.
    2. Cold compress on the ankle or wrist for 30 minutes, 3 times a day.
    3. Wrap ankle or wrist with elastic bandage after the ice pack.
    4. Rest the foot or arm for 3 days for severe swelling and pain.
    5. Consult the physician immediately for severe pain and swelling.

Herbal Medications
   
    1. Sabila leaves poultice
        * Pound 2 to 3 fresh leaves.
        - Apply directly as poultice on the ankle or wrist for 
          30 minutes, 3 times a day.
          Use bandage to hold poultice in place.

    2. Kamantigui stems and leaves poultice
       * Pound  2 stems with leaves.
         Apply directly as poultice for 30 minutes, 3 times a day.
         Use bandage to hold the poultice in place.

    3. Kakawate leaves poultice
        * Crush 10 leaves.
        - Apply directly as poultice for 30 minutes, 3 times a day.
          Use bandage to hold the poultice in place.

    4. Mayana leaves poultice
       * Crush 10 leaves.
       -  Apply directly as poultice for 10 minutes, 3 times a day.

    A sore throat is a congestion or inflammation in the
throat due to tonsillitis, pharyngitis or laryngitis.

Water Treatments

 
    1. Hot salt gargle, 3 times a day. Before breakfast, 

        before lunch, and at bedtime.
    2. Heating throat compress at bedtime. Leave it on until morning.
        Repeat procedure if the patient stays home in the morning.
    3. Steam inhalation, 2 times a day. In the morning before breakfast,
        and before bedtime after the hot salt gargle.
    4. If possible, rest the voice until the swelling or inflammation subsides.

Herbal Medications

 
    1. Luya or ginger lozenges
        * Wash and peel a small piece of ginger.
        - Chew slowly for a few minutes. Swallow the juice.
                  Or, keep a small piece in the mouth, chewing it little by little.

    2. Sabila leaves
        * Wash the leaf and cut in 1/2 inch sizes.
        - Keep in the mouth all day, swallowing the juice.
          Take another piece when there is no more juice.

    3. Bawang lozenges
        * Wash one piece and peel.
        - Keep in the mouth for some time, chewing it slow.
          Swallow juice.

    Snake bites may be poisonous and can be fatal if nothing is done immediately.

First Aid

    1. Keep the patient still to slow down circulation.
    2. Incise the bitten area and let it bleed to remove the poison.
    3. Wrap a teaspoonful of salt in a handkerchief or a piece of
        cloth and moisten the salt with water.
        Apply it directly over the wound after the bleeding.    
        Apply for 10-15 minutes.
    4. Bring the patient to the nearest hospital or clinic immediately.

    1. Adelfa leaves and branch poultice
        * Pound 10 leaves and a piece of branch.
        - Apply directly on the wound after it has been bled.

    2. Kamantigui flowers poultice
        * Crush about 10 flowers.

Water Treatments

 
    1. Starch bath. You may use kamoteng kahoy flour for this.
    2. Gawgaw or starch powder. Use as powder after the bath or at bedtime.

Herbal Medications

 
    1. Kakawate leaves
        * Crush or chop young leaves and extract juice.
        - Apply the juice on the skin until the itchiness is relieved.

    2. Kalatsutsi sap from leaves and trunk
        * Extract the sap or juice from the leaves and trunk. 

           Mix with coconut oil.
        - Rub the mixture on the affected skin, 2 times a day.

    3. Kanya Pistula (Golden Showers) leaves
        * Crush young leaves.
        - Rub the crushed leaves on the affected area until 

           relieved from itchiness.

    2. Use dry starch or gawgaw as powder if the skin is itchy and dry at night.
    3. Don't use soap when taking a bath; take a starch bath instead.
        Don't rub skin with towel to dry skin.
    4. Don't scratch skin when itchy.

Herbal Medications

 
    1. Comfrey leaves
        * Crush leaves and extract the juice.
        - Apply the juice on the affected skin, 3 times a day.

    2. Balete bark
        * Boil one cup of chopped bark in 1/2 gallon of water for 10 minutes.
        - Wash area with this decoction, 2 times a day.
                  This may be done instead of the starch bath.

    3. Kalatsutsi sap
        * Get the sap from the trunk and mix with a few drops of oil.
        - Apply directly on the affected skin.

    4. Kakawate leaves
        * Crush 10 leaves and extract the juice.
        - Apply the juice on the itchy skin but do not rub.
          Apply as often as necessary for itchiness.

    Scabies ("galis aso") is a contagious disorder of the skin caused by
Sarcoptes scabiei, characterized by multiform lesions with intense itching
which occur mostly at night.

Water Treatments 

 
    1. Daily bath with soap and water. Change into clean clothes every
        after bath, including underwears.
    2. Put under the sun all beddings used at night: mat, pillows, sheets,
        blankets and night clothes.
    3. Sleep alone to prevent contaminating other members of the family.
    4. Always keep clean. Wash hands, feet and face, or 

        take a bath before sleeping.

Herbal Medications

 
    1. Makabuhay vine tub bath
       * Chop a meter-long vine and boil in one gallon water for 15 minutes.
                 Add enough water to fill up one plastic pail big enough 

         to    completely soak a child, if the whole body is infected.
       - For adults, use the decoction for hot compress on the 

         affected parts only.

    2. Kalatsutsi leaves
       * Boil 1 cup chopped fresh leaves and a small branch in 1/2 cup
         coconut oil for 5 minutes. Let cool and keep in bottle for future use.
       - Apply on the infected body part liberally after taking a bath.

    3. Mangga gum resin or sap
        * Mix well the gum resin or sap taken from the mango 

          trunk or bark with oil.
        - Apply liberally on the affected part, 2 times a day
          every after bath and in the evening before sleeping.

    4. Kakawate leaves
        * Extract juice from the leaves.
        - Apply on the affected parts after taking a bath, and at bedtime

    Ringworm is an infection of the skin, hair, and nails with various fungi,
producing ring-like lesions with raised borders.

Water Treatments Using Herbal Decoctions
    
    1. Daily bath with bayabas leaves decoction
        * Boil 10 cups of chopped fresh leaves in 
          1/2 gallon of water for 15 minutes.
          Add enough cold water to fill up one big pail after straining.
        - Bathe with this decoction while still hot.

    2. Tabako leaves decoction shampoo (if head and hair are affected)
        * Boil 10 leaves of fresh tabako leaves in 1/2 gallon of water for
          15 minutes. Cool and drain. Add enough water
          to fill up a 3-gallon pail.
        - Shampoo hair with the decoction, once a day, until healed. 

    3. Kamantigui compress or poultice
        * Crush 5-10 kamantigui flowers. Amount depends 
          upon the size of the infection.
          Crush the flowers until the juice is extracted.
        - Apply directly over the infected part as compress 
          for 30 minutes, 2 times a day.

    4. Bawang cloves
        * Peel and crush one clove and rub it on the affected 
           part until it gets red.
        - Apply 2 times a day: in the morning after the morning 
          bath, and at bedtime.

    5. Adelfa bark and leaves
        * Chop a one-foot long branch. Mix with 1 cup chopped 
           fresh young leaves.
           Mix the juice with 5 drops fo fresh coconut oil.
        - Apply on affected parts, 3 times a day.

    6. Akapulko leaves
       * Crush 5 leaves.
       - Rub the juice on the affected areas, 2 times a day.

    Rheumatism is a form of arthritis affecting the large joints of the extremities.

Water Treatments

    1. Heating compress on the affected joints, every night.
    2. Fomentation on the joints, once a day.
    3. Hot compress on the joints, once or twice a day for severe cases.
    4. Rest the extremity if there is severe pain and swelling.
    5. After swelling is gone, patient may do mild 
        non-weight-bearing exercises.

Herbal Medications

    1. Kilaw poultice
       * Chop or crush a rhizome and mix with oil.
       - Apply on the joint as poultice overnight.

    2. Mangga bark hot compress
      * Boil a piece of chopped bark.
      - Use the decoction for hot compress.

    3. Malabulak leaves and young stalks compress
       * Chop leaves and young stalks and put in a cloth bag.
         Add 1/2 tsp. salt.
       - Warm the bag and apply as compress.

    4. Lumbang bato leaves compress
        * Heat the leaves.
        - Apply on the joints directly while still hot for 15 minutes, 
          2 times a day.

    5. Herba Buena leaves
       * Boil 4 tablespoons of dried leaves in 2 cups of water for 15 minutes.
         Dosage:
             Adults: 1/2 glass, every 4 hours

    Acne is a skin condition common in adolescents and young adults.
This is characterized by comedones which often become inflamed and form papules,
pustules, modules and cysts which usually occur on the face, chest and back.

Water Treatments 

 
    1. Wash face with warm water using mild soap, 3 times a day.
    2. Steam face for 15 minutes after washing, once a day.
    3. Avoid touching face with fingers. Don't prick pimples with fingers.
    4. Drink plenty of fruit juices and fresh water.
    5. Get enough sleep, at least 7-8 hours a day.
    6. Eat less of starchy foods, sweets, chocolates and nuts.
        Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Herbal Medications

 
    1. Ripe papaya with kalamansi juice
        * Mix three tablespoons of mashed ripe papaya,
          with 1 tablespoon kalamansi juice.
        - Apply mixture on the face every after washing.
          Leave it on for 30 minutes, then wash face with warm water.
          You may leave it on the face overnight if you can tolerate it.

    2. Sabila leaves
        * Get one leaf and peel the outer covering.
        - Rub the juice on the face every after washing 

           with warm water, Leave it on for
          30 minutes. You may leave it on the face overnight 

           if you can tolerate it.

    3. Romero leaves
        * Crush 5 leaves and extract the juice.
        - Apply juice on face after washing it with warm water. 

           Leave it on overnight.

    Mumps is an acute communicable viral disease with a painful
enlargement of the salivary glands, frequently invading other
tissues like the testes, pancreas and the meninges.

Water Treatments

 
    1. Cold compress directly on the swollen salivary glands 

        for 30 minutes, 3 times a day.
    2. Ice pack on the swollen glands for 30 minutes, 3 times a day.
        Apply the ice pack over the glands, just below the ears.
    3. Fever sponge bath for fever.
    4. Cold compress on the forehead for headache and fever.
    5. Complete bed rest, especially for male adults.
        Sterility is one of the complications of mumps in male adults.

Herbal Medications

 
    1. Makahiya leaves
       * Crush leaves and make into paste.
       -  Apply directly on the swollen gland after the cold compress.
          Apply for 30 minutes, 3 times a day.

    2.Kantutay leaves
      * Pound or chop the leaves.
      - Apply directly as poultice on the swollen glands for 

        30 minutes, 3 times a day.

    3. Kamias fruits
       * Chop and mash fruits.
       - Apply as poultice on the swollen glands for 30 minutes, 3 times a day.

    4. Gisol rhizomes
        * Chop the rhizomes.
        - Apply directly as poultice on the swollen glands for 

          30 minutes, 3 times a day.

    5. Lagundi leaves for fever
        * Follow instructions for fever..

Water Treatment

 
    1. Rub the infected area with wet soap (any kind of toilet soap).
        Don't rinse with water; let it dry on the skin for 2 hours.
        If itchiness is not relieved, repeat after 4 hours.

Preventive Measures

 
    1. Use mosquito nets at night when sleeping.
        If possible, put screen on all windows and doors of the house.
    2. Keep the surroundings clean and dry.
        Empty all stagnant water containers in and around the house.

    1. Kataka-taka leaves
       * Pound 5-10 leaves and extract the juice.
       - Apply the juice directly on the infected bites, 3 times a day.

    2. Atis - unripe fruit and seeds
        * Pound and extract the juice from one unripe fruit.

    Measles is an acute viral infection characterized by morbilliform
eruptions with catarrhal inflammation of the conjunctiva and the air passages.

Water Treatments

    1. Give fever sponge bath for fever three times a day.
    2. Apply a continuous cold compress on the forehead for headache.
    3. For coughs, give fomentation to the chest and back, 2 times a day.
    4. A starch bath to relieve itchiness can be given daily to take
        the place of sponge bath.
    5. Protect eyes from bright light. Make the room dim with curtains
        on the windows and dim lights at night.

Herbal Medications

    1. Lagundi leaves for fever
        Follow instructions in the chapter on fever.

    2. Kamoteng kahoy flour for starch bath
        * Remove peelings and grate the tuber. Extract the juice,
          add water enough for one baby bath tub and boil.
        - Soak the baby in the starchy water for 10-15 minutes
          but don't rub the skin. May apply directly as powder on the skin.

    Lice ("kuto") is a small, wingless, flattened insect which
produces irritating dermatitis on the scalp.

Herbal Treatments

 
    1. Shampoo hair with gugo bark or any commercial shampoo.
    2. Immediately after the shampoo. comb hair with fine comb
        ("suyod") to remove the live lice.
    3. If possible, shampoo every day for one week and comb
        hair with fine comb twice a day.   
    4. To get rid of the nits (lice eggs), wet hair wit'n hot vinegar for
        half an hour before the shampoo. Then, comb hair 

        with fine comb thoroughly.
    5. At bedtime, pound 1/2 cup of atis seeds. Mix it with 1/4 cup of oil.
       Apply thoroughly the oil-and atis-seed mixture over the scalp and hair.
       Wrap the hair and head with a piece of clean 

       cloth and leave it on overnight.
       Shampoo the next morning and comb hair with fine comb.
    6. Do this treatment daily for 3-5 days or until all lice and nits are gone.
        Destroy or kill the lice and nits as soon as they are removed from
        the hair and head.
    7. Always keep hair clean and well combed. Don't use the comb of other
        persons. Don't sleep with an individual infested with lice.

    Indigestion is the disturbance in the digestive function
of the stomach or its failure to digest food.

Suggestive Measures to Avoid Digestion:
    1. Withhold food intake for four hours.
    2. Drink one glass of hot water every hour during the 4-hour fasting.
    3. Eat a slice of ripe papaya 30 minutes after a heavy meal
    4. Eat light meals without fatty foods after the four-hour fasting.

Herbal Medications to Aid Digestion:
    1. Papaya, ripe
        Eat as a fruit dessert, especially with heavy meals.
        Papaya helps in the digestion of protein.

    2. Kamatsili leaves
        * Boil 1 cup in 5 glasses of water for 10 minutes. Add 1/2 teaspoon salt.
        - Dosage:
        Adults: 2 cups initial, and then 1 cup every 4 hours
        Children: 1 cup initial, and then 1/2 cup every 4 hours
        Babies: 1 tbsp. initial, and then 1 teaspoon every 4 hours

    3. Anonas leaves
        * Warm the leaves in open fire.
        - Apply the leaves directly on the stomach while still warm.
          Use abdominal binder. Renew every 2 hours.

    Hyperacidity is the excessive secretion of acid in the
stomach which may be due to tension, starvation, and other causes.

Suggestions for Relief of Symptoms:
    1. Learn to relax and exercise.
    2. Have a regular meal time.
    3. Drink water between and not during meals.
    4. Don't eat spicy and hot foods.

Herbal Naturalizer to Help Relieve Symptoms:
    1. Carrot and cabbage juice
        * Wash and slice in small pieces one big carrot and 1/4 kilo cabbage.
          Osterize the carrots and cabbage with 2 glasses of water.
          Strain and add 1 tablespoon sugar. Sugar is optional.
          Keep in refrigerator to cool. Prepare for one day's supply only.
        - Drink one glass of the carrot and cabbage juice
          30 minutes before meals, and when there is gastric pain.

    2. Olive oil
        - Take one teaspoon 30 minutes before meals for severe symptoms.
          Note: Do this only when there are symptoms.
           Olive oil may increase cholesterol blood level.

    Herpes simplex is an acute viral disease, characterized by groups
of vesicles of small blisters. Commonly recurrent, herpes is at times seen in the same
place it was seen before.

Water Treatments Using Herbal Decoctions
    1. Daily bath with soap and warm water.
       
    2. Kalatsutsi juice
        * Extract juice from the leaves.
        - Apply directly on the lesions, 3 times a day.
   
    3. Adelfa bark and leaves
        * Mix well 1 cup of chopped leaves and bark with 2 tablespoons of oil.
        - Apply on the lesions, 3 times a day.

    4. Akapulko leaves
        * Extract the juice from the leaves.
        - Apply the juice directly on the lesions.

    5. Singkamas seeds
        * Pound or grind fine 10 seeds and boil in 
          2 tablespoons of oil for 5 minutes.

in the lower rectum or anus.

Water Treatment Using Herbal Decoctions
    1. Hot sitz bath, 2 times a day.
    2. Use any one of these herbal leaves in making
        decoction for hot sitz bath:

    Kamias leaves
       * Boil 3 cups of chopped fresh leaves in
         2 gallons of water for 10 minutes. Strain.
       - Use this decoction for hot sitz bath.

    Patola leaves
       * Wash and chop about 20 leaves and boil in
         2 gallons of water for 10 minutes. Strain.
       - Use this decoction for hot sitz bath.

Herbal Medications
    1. Ampalaya  roots, fruits and seeds
        * Wash and chop the roots, fruits and seeds.
         Extract the juice and mix with oil. Use 1/2 cup chopped roots,
          fruits and seeds with 2 tablespoons of oil.
        - Wet cotton with the ampalaya-oil mixture
          and apply on the hemorrhoids after the hot sitz bath.

    Sinusitis is the inflammation of any of the paranasal
sinuses, as the frontal, maxillary, or ethmoidal sinuses.

Water Treatments
    1. Steam inhalation, 2 times a day.
    2. Hot foot bath, if headache is due to head congestions.
    3. Hot compress on the sinuses.    
    4. Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water or fruit juices durint the day.
    5. Avoid eating sweet and oily foods.

Herbal Medications
    1. Mansanilya leaves
       * Crush 5 fresh leaves and drop 2 drops of coconut oil on them.
         Heat the leaves directly over the fire without burning them.
       - While still hot, apply directly over the forehead for the frontal sinusitis
         and over the cheeks near the nose for the maxillary sinusitis. 
         Apply in the evening at bedtime for 30 minutes.

    2. Mayana leaves
        * Heat 10 fresh leaves over the fire. Heat only 4 leaves at a time.
        - Apply directly while still  hot over the forehead for frontal
          sinusitis, and over the cheeks near the nose for maxillary sinusitis,
          Replace the cold leaves with the newly heated ones till all
         10 leaves are used up. Do this 2 times a day

    3. Sambong leaves
        * Crush 5 leaves and heat directly over open fire, one at a time.
        - Apply directly while still hot over the forehead for frontal
          sinusitis and over the cheeks for maxillary sinusitis.
          Replace the cool leaf with a newly heated one till all
          5 leaves are used up. Do this 2 times a day.

    Fractures are breaks in the bones. A simple fracture is one where there
is no wound on the skin. A compound fracture is one where a broken bone
protrudes through the skin.

First Aid
    1. Don't lift the victim. Let him lie flat on the ground or 

        where you found him.
        Don't massage or use any herbal concoction or poultice on the fracture
    2. Examine the body for bleeding but do not move the extremities.
        If he is conscious, ask him where it hurts.
    3. When the fracture is identified, immobilize the body part.
        Get two pieces of wood or sticks and splint the fractured leg or arm.
        Cut out his clothes or your shirt to tie the splint if 

        strings are not available.
        Handkerchiefs may be used, if available, to tie the splint.
    4. The splint should be placed to limit ht movement of the joints.
        The fractured arm can be tied to the body while the 

        fractured leg can be tied to the other
        leg if splint materials are not available.
    5. Transport the victim carefully and right away to the 

        nearest hospital for immediate care.

    A flatulence is the presence of excessive gas in the stomach and in the intestinal tract.

Water Treatments
    1. Fomentation on the abdomen, 2 times a day.
    2. Turpentine stupes, 2 times a day.
    3. Heating compress on the abdomen overnight.
    4. Rectal tube insertion for severe gas pain, especially for babies.

Herbal Medications
    1. Mansanilya leaves
       * Crush or chop leaves and mix with coconut oil.
       - Rub the oil mixture on the abdomen and apply abdominal
         binder. Leave binder on overnight of for at least 4 hours.

    2. Kilaw (yellow ginger)
       * Chop and boil one piece, 2 inches in size, in 2 glasses 

         of water for 10 minutes.
       - Dosage:
         Adults: 1 cup, every 4 hours
         Children: (Babies) 1 tbp., every 4 hours
               (2-6 yrs.) 1/4 cup. every 4 hours
               (7-12 yrs.) 1/2 cup, every 4 hours

    3. Herba Buena leaves
        * Boil one tablespoon of dried leaves or 5 chopped fresh
          leaves in 1 glass of water for 5 minutes.
        - Dosage:
          Adults: 1 glass, every 4 hours
          Children: (Babies) 1 tbp., every 4 hours
                (2-6 yrs.) 1/2 cup, every 4 hours
                (7-12 yrs.) 1 cup, every 4 hours
